BATON ROUGE- Four victims of a oil platform explosion are at a burn unit, getting treatment.
The victims were transferred to Baton Rouge General Mid City from a hospital in the New Orleans area Friday evening. The hospital cannot comment specifically on the patients' injuries or care.
But, the hospital did share some of what happens when people are taken to the burn center.
En route, patients are given fluids and vitals are checked constantly. At the burn center, their status is evaluated.
The first 24 to 48 hours after the bur are critical, according to medical professionals.
In the best-case scenario, a burn can be treated in a days or weeks. In the worst case, where burns are deep and impact organs, recovery can be long and painful.
The four patients have the most severe injuries so far from an oil platform accident earlier Friday. Two people are still missing after a cutting torch ignited a fire ball on the platform, about 26 miles off the coast of Louisiana.
Names of those involved have not been released.
