AMELIA - Gov. Bobby Jindal watched this afternoon as workers sank a barge into the Atchafalaya River at Bayou Chene to help prevent back flooding in that area.

Jindal was touring flood preparation measures around the Morgan City area, one of the bigger towns in the path of floodwaters from the Morganza Spillway.

That barge and three others that were sunk should force floodwaters into unpopulated wetlands in the Atchafalaya Basin, which will help protect Morgan City, Amelia, Stephensville, Gibson, Belle River, Pierre Part and other communities in that area.

Michael Shingleton will have more on other efforts to protect that area of St. Mary Parish from flooding tonight on News 2 at 5, 6 and 10.
