Four barges break loose on Atchafalaya River
SIMMESPORT- The Simmesport Bridge, which is located on LA-1, has reopened after four barges broke loose on the Atchafalaya River.
Major Steven Martel with the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff's Office says the barges broke loose from their moorings before 8 a.m. and hit a railroad bridge. Martel says they haven't figured out where the barges broke loose.
The loose barges in the Atchafalaya River are now hung up at the Kansas City Southern Railroad Bridge in Simmesport.
Officials say the barges are carrying grain and are not carrying hazardous materials.
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating and trying to figure out how to wrangle the barges.
The railroad bridge is closed until further notice.
