BATON ROUGE - Since officially opening in September, the Family and Youth Service Center deals with more than just kids skipping school.

Formerly called the East Baton Rouge Parish Truancy Center, FYSC welcomes parents and provides a link with law enforcement.

Dozens of parents attend classes and meet with counselors daily about how to keep their kids in school.

Wednesday, parents listened to instructors about how to deal with teenagers who won't listen to instruction.

Program Director Roxson Welch said they've seen more truant kids than usual, but she attributes that to parents taking action.

"We've seen about twice as many, but it's parents or grandparents bringing teens in who aren't going to school," Welch said.

The center is funded by a $1 million grant for the next three years.
