Former St. Helena Sheriff dies
ST. HELENA PARISH - Former St. Helena Parish Sheriff Eugene Holland has died. He was 76 years old.
Investigator Joe Chaney said Holland died after he collapsed in his home last night. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors said he had suffered a heart attack.
Holland served as Sheriff from 1984 until 1996, when he resigned. Before that, Chaney said Holland worked as a log contractor.
In 1997 Holland was found guilty of misuse of public funds, after using prison inmates for personal labor and funds from the sheriff's office to pay personal bills. He served 16 months in jail.
Holland lived in Greensburg until he died.
