Former LSU pitcher Rumbelow called up to MLB by the Yankees
BATON ROUGE - Former LSU pitcher Nick Rumbelow has been called up to the Major Leagues by the New York Yankees, and he has joined the club for its series with the Philadelphia Phillies at Yankee Stadium.
Rumbelow, a right-hander from Bullard, Texas, was called up to the big leagues from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate. Rumbelow was selected by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 2013 MLB Draft.
Rumbelow pitched for three seasons (2011-13) in the LSU bullpen, making 70 career appearances. He posted a 3-0 mark and a 3.71 ERA in 70.1 innings with 40 walks and 86 strikeouts.
He made 31 appearances in 2013, posting a 1-0 mark and a 3.31 ERA in 32.2 innings with 15 walks and 36 strikeouts as he helped lead the Tigers to the College World Series. He fired five scoreless innings in 2013 NCAA Tournament play (three appearances), allowing just one hit with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Rumbelow turned in a perfect relief outing in the 2013 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional championship game versus Louisiana-Lafayette, as he limited the Cajuns to no runs and no hits in 2.2 innings with no walks and four strikeouts.
Rumbelow becomes the ninth former LSU player coached by Paul Mainieri to reach the big leagues. The others are pitcher Louis Coleman, pitcher Charlie Furbush, pitcher Ryan Verdugo, infielder DJ LeMahieu, pitcher Kevin Gausman, pitcher Anthony Ranaudo, infielder Matt Clark and outfielder Mikie Mahtook.
LSU has had at least one former player make his MLB debut in 23 of the past 25 seasons. LSU has produced a total of 67 Major Leaguers during its illustrious baseball history.
There are five former LSU players currently in the big leagues, including Rumbelow, Furbush (Mariners), LeMahieu (Rockies), infielder Aaron Hill (Diamondbacks) and pitcher Will Harris (Astros).
