NEW ORLEANS - The former executive director of the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association will serve 13 months in federal prison after her conviction for conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud and identity fraud.
Mona Hebert Romero was sentenced Friday. The 43-year-old Metairie woman was also ordered to pay $21,562 in restitution.
Romero pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy on July 26, five weeks prior to her scheduled trial with co-defendant, Sean Daniel Alfortish, former president of the LHBPA.
Authorities say Romero admitted that she, Alfortish and others conspired to rig the 2008 HBPA election for president and members of the board of directors. Alfortish was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison.
