NEW ROADS - A former pro basketball player is helping people in Pointe Coupee Parish beat the heat.

James "Big Brown" Joseph and his friends will give out free fans and AC units this weekend to people in need.

"It's very hot in the summer time in Louisiana and some people they don't have an air condition," he said. "Sometimes people just started crying after they receive one from us."

Donations make the free fans and AC units possible. If you'd like to help, fans or AC units can be donated or purchased at the New Roads Walmart tonight or Saturday. Be sure to tell the store the purchase is for the Beat the Heat campaign.
