BATON ROUGE – The East Baton Rouge Metro Council announced that the old 15th Street Fire Station on South 15th Street will become The Destiny Center.

The center will be an outreach center to enhance the community.

"People can come and be happy and treated good and learning different things as well," Kenya Jarmon, founder of The Destiny Center, said.

The building that was once a home for firemen, will become a place for sports, cultural and academic activities for both adults and children in East Baton Rouge.

"Parents can feel more comfortable with going to work and if they have to work extra hours they can do that because they can be secure and knowing that their kids are safe and that their time is being well spent, not just idle time where their just maybe loafing around the streets or playing outside but they are learning," Jarmon said.

Councilwoman Tara Wicker said that she is glad to see an old property transform into a community jewel.

"But when you can take an eyesore like this in a community, transform that into something that's going to be a jewel that's gonna be productive that's going to be an attribute instead of a liability--an asset instead of a liability to the community, it's a win win for everybody," Wicker said.

The center plans to open in January.
