DENHAM SPRINGS – Parts of Florida Blvd between Denham Springs and Walker were closed Sunday night after a bridge over West Colyell Creek sustained damage.

City of Walker officials said Wednesday that the US 190 bridge has been given top priority by the governor's office and DOTD. Work at that bridge began Wednesday afternoon.

"Because of the extent of the damage, emergency procedures allow bypassing normal bid laws and extra crews have been brought in to expedite," a statement released Wednesday said.

Officials expect bridge repairs to be completed within 10 days.

Sunday, drivers noticed that the edges of the bridge appeared to be buckling and some of the ground under the bridge had eroded away.

WBRZ News 2's Brett Buffington said the bridge appeared to be sinking, with a significant dip in the roadway on the Denham Springs side of the bridge.

Water from West Colyell Creek flows to the Amite River near Port Vincent. The Amite River was one of the last rivers in the Baton Rouge area to fall below flood stage after historic floods ravaged Livingston Parish.

The West Colyell Creek bridge was not the only bridge in the area that sustained damage. Walker officials said the Burgess Bridge has been condemned because of extensive damage. Officials expect construction at that location to take months.
