HOUMA - A phone application will allow boat sailors a way to check floodgate closures in the Terrebonne Levee District.

The app named Floodgate Mate is set to launch in late November for iPhones, Androids, and other Smartphones. Boaters who don't have a Smartphone can get text-updates from the service or call a toll-free telephone line to find out about the gate closures.

Angela Rains, Terrebonne Administrative Manager, says the parish maintains nine floodgates and the gates are shown on a map of Terrebonne. The app use colored dots to tell if the floodgate is open, closed, or about to open or close.

National Weather Service updates will also be featured in the app.
