MORGANZA - People here and in other floodways should expect their annual warning in the mail from the Army Corps of Engineers.

The corps said Monday, it disseminated its yearly memo to residents and landowners, reminding them that floodways along the Mississippi River could be activated in a high water event. In Baton Rouge, the Mississippi River was inches shy of its flood stage of 35 feet. In Natchez Mississippi, the river already reached flood stage by lunchtime Monday.

"The notice serves as a reminder to those that live, operate and / or do business within these floodways that there is a risk that they may experience flooding if the floodways are activated," the corps said in a statement.

Tuesday, the corps plans to discuss how it will deal with the river level. At a press conference after lunch, the corps will talk about flood fighting efforts already in progress along the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers and discuss the potential operation of Bonnet Carré Spillway near New Orleans. The Mississippi River is expected to crest later in January.
