BATON ROUGE- Five Baton Rouge Police Officers are on paid administrative leave following a shooting that happened shortly before midnight.

Investigators say two men were in the area between Choctaw and Chippewa when a DPS officer tried to pull them over for having a burned-out headlight. The car did not stop, and that's when a chase began according to authorities. It all came to an end in the parking lot of a shopping center at the corner of Acadian and Perkins.

"Our officers were in fear for their life," Don Coppola with Baton Rouge Police said. "This was a vehicle coming at them with intent to harm them so shots were fired."

Bebe Henderson heard sirens and thought a strobe light was going off in her bedroom.

"Our room was filled with blue lights," Henderson said. "It was pretty scary."

That's when Henderson recalls things getting interesting.

"I heard, 1, 2, 3 then a bunch of sirens, screeching and four gunshots," Henderson recalled.

The WBRZ Investigative Unit has learned the suspects are brothers. Baton Rouge Police declined to release their names or say if they had prior criminal histories.

Clean up crews spent Tuesday morning cleaning up the mess left behind. They sprayed bleach on blood stains in the parking lot. Our sources tell us at least 18 rounds were fired. It's unclear where the suspects got shot or how many times. We've learned both of them had to undergo surgery.

As Henderson reflects on what unfolded, she's happy none of the officers were hurt.

"This is considered a nice area, so to see that going on we didn't know what to think of it," Henderson said.

Investigators plan to release the names of the five officers on paid leave tomorrow. Charges for the driver and possible charges for the passenger are pending.
