Fishermen in St. Bernard Parish defended their homeland in a last-ditch effort to stem the tide of oil pushing into the marshes southeast of New Orleans.

At Elephant Pass, about 200 fishermen in 55 boats got to work unloading and anchoring the orange booms in waterways leading into saltwater marshes where coyotes, dolphins, egrets, snakes and an abundance of marsh grass species and flowers are the main residents.
