BATON ROUGE - The Secretary of State's Office held a demonstration of the new ballot scanning equipment 9 a.m. Monday in the auditorium.

Secretary of State and East Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters staff members were the first group of trainees.

The absentee voting system will be used in the October 22 election.

The new and existing equipment will be merged to create one system for absentee mail voting, early voting and election day voting.

The goal is to have consistency in training and procedures for election officials across the state.

The new scanning system will better the process for counting paper ballots. It will also allow the parish boards of election supervisors to review the intent of each voted ballot.

Help America Act funded the new system with a grant.
