Ascension Parish firefighters took part in a specialized collapsed building training course Friday. The course is designed to teach first responders how to reach victims buried in heavy debris while keeping rescuers safe.
"This is not training they get for normal daily operations," said Rick Weber with the Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security. "These are incidents that happen rarely but they need to be trained to standards, not only to rescue the residents that may be in jeopardy, but safety for themselves to enter the building."
Sixteen firefighters took part in the training qualifying with FEMA standards, which means they can respond to disasters worldwide.
