GONZALES - Ascension Parish leaders recognized a volunteer firefighter recently for his heroic actions at a local fire.

Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez presented Mike Breaux with a parish certificate of recognition. Breaux is a safety officer with the St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department.

On Jan. 15, Breaux and other firefighters responded to a fire at a trailer where 12 people lived in Gonzales. Most of the residents made it out of the trailer before firefighters arrived, and Breaux was able to help a wheelchair-bound woman out of the trailer before something inside exploded.

No one was injured in the fire.
