Firefighter charged with setting woods fires
JONESBORO - Authorities arrested a man for setting a string of woods fires in 2010 and 2011.
Justin Murphy, 22, was charged with setting six fires in Jackson Parish where he was a volunteer firefighter, the Department of Agriculture and Forestry said in a news release Friday. Investigators questioned Murphy about another fire that burned 800 acres, a home and threatened other buildings and a chemical train in Bienville Parish.
Authorities said Murphy admitted to setting fires since he was paid $10 for every call out on a grass fire and $25 for each call out to a woods fire.
Thursday, the state issue a state-wide burn ban.
