Fireboat like this likely needed in Livingston
ST AMANT - The fire department here has a tool that could be needed in neighboring Livingston Parish: a fireboat.
The boat, recently purchased by the St. Amant Fire Department, assists all sorts of emergencies on the water. Recently, it was dispatched to help battle a fire in a remote area of Livingston Parish.
"The other night, that's what saved quite a bit of damage being able to place that high volume of water on the portion of the structure that wasn't burned," said Shane Stuntz with the St. Amant Fire Department.
A home in Three Rivers Island caught on fire. The community is only accessible via a footbridge for pedestrians or golf carts and docks for boats. There are no roads for fire trucks.
So, St. Amant was asked to help fight the fire.
The boat, docked on the Diversion Canal, hit the water within minutes of the emergency call. Seventeen minutes later, it was dousing the flames, assisting Livingston Fire Districts 8 and 9.
"Without the fire boat, that would have been a total loss," said Stuntz.
The Three River's Island Homeowners Association is working with the Livingston Parish Council to set aside funds for a similar boat, which was designed by Ascension marine and made possible with a donation by PCS Nitrogen.
