Fire Station Closure Causes Concern

5 years ago September 09, 2009 Sep 9, 2009 Wednesday, September 09 2009 Wednesday, September 09, 2009 4:41:37 PM CDT in News

Budget cuts mean there's no longer a full time fire department at the state mental health hospital in Jackson. The department also helped protect Dixon Correctional Institute and the Louisiana War Veteran's Home.  Both are state run facilities near Jackson.

Jackson Volunteer Fire Department Chief T.W. Prewitt says his department can't handle taking over the facilities. He says he doesn't have the resources.  Prewitt says fire ratings for the Jackson district will go up and that could cost property owners about $300 dollar more each year for insurance.

State hospital officials say steps are being taking to handle the safety concerns. They include training mental health hospital supervisors for fire fighting and new evacuation plans.
