Fire evacuation ends, families allowed back home
DEHNAM SPRINGS - About 30 families will sleep in their own beds this weekend after being forced out of their homes by a large oil storage tank fire.
Thursday night, one tank exploded and a few hours later, caught the storage tank adjoining it on fire too. The incident prompted an evacuation of homes on Linder Road in Livingston Parish.
"It shook the trailer. It was a loud boom," said Nikki Wilkinson.
"Thought it was thunder. A lot of people thought it was thunder and went back to sleep before the cops came knocking on their door and told them to leave before it blew up again."
With only the clothes on their backs, Wilkinson and her roommate spent a majority of Friday just waiting for the smoke to clear.
Crews allowed the fire to burn all day Friday then smothered the flames with special firefighting foam.
Emergency responders said while most of the fire is gone, the rubble will continue to smolder through the weekend.
