BATON ROUGE - Firefighters said a bar and several apartments were destroyed by a fire Friday morning in Baton Rouge.

The fire broke out around 5 a.m. at a strip mall on Drusilla Lane. Curt Monte with the Baton Rouge Fire Department said it severely damaged a strip mall and destroyed a bar there, and damaged several apartments in a nearby building.

A firefighter was burned and a person who lives nearby complained of smoke inhalation.

Traffic officials closed Old Hammond Highway in both directions from Tara Boulevard to Airline Highway while working the scene. It didn't reopen until 4 p.m.

The Red Cross said they assisted five families, a total of 11 people, who lived in the destroyed apartments.
