BATON ROUGE - Firefighters urged people to make sure they're safely prepared for this week's drop in temperature, and don't take any risks just to stay warm.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department released a checklist Wednesday for people to make sure they're not creating fire hazards with their chimneys, space heaters, or other heating elements.

According to the American Red Cross, heating sources are the second leading cause of home fire deaths, and fatal home fires increase during the winter months.

Authorities say fatal fires also peak in the early morning hours when most people are sleeping.

News 2 will have more on colder weather preprations happening around the Baton Rouge area tonight on WBRZ.
