WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH - Trying to save a few minutes may have caused a brutal train wreck in Erwinville, which the driver of a flat bed truck narrowly escaped.

"This is one of worst ones we've worked at this crossing," Erwinville Fire Chief Robby Smith said.

The crash happened at Highway 190 and South Winterville Road. Investigators believe the driver of the truck may have tried to beat the train, when it collided with the truck. It spun the truck around and sent a forklift attached to the back of the truck nearly 200 feet away.

News 2 was there as firefighters and paramedics arrived to rush the driver to the hospital.

"This guy is very lucky to be alive," Smith said. "As you can see, the train hit the truck and spun him around and hit him two times."

Neighbors in the area told News 2 they want something done about the intersection.

"For somebody to die for something to be done, the situation is too late," Erwinville Resident, Christopher Moore said.

Moore and other residents like Macey Saizon want to see crossing arms installed.

"They should be at all tracks, so people can be safe," Saizon said.

The driver is expected to make a full recovery. It's unclear if he will be cited.
