BATON ROUGE- Finally, drivers began cruising down four new, clean lanes of Staring Lane Tuesday afternoon.

City Green Light chiefs said it was their priority to open the newly-constructed highway this week and crews spent the afternoon removing orange construction cones and barriers from the thruway.

Now, travel is allowed on all four lanes of the highway connecting Essen with Burbank.

"It's long overdue. I've been living in Baton Rouge for a long time, since it was one little lane and it is due time," driver Melissa Mouton said. Mouton drove on the revamped highway not long after all lanes were opened just before Tuesday's evening rush.

The highway was anticipated to be open by September 2012, but weather and sewer lines were blamed for causing serious delays with the project.

There could be rolling lane closures for crews doing lingering work.

Editor's note: this is an updated version of the original story from Tuesday evening. Web producers updated the time stamp after adding comments from drivers and the exact time the road opened.
