Final push to get school tax approved
Ascension parish school leaders are in the final days of their push to gain support for a multi-million dollar tax proposition.
Voters head to the polls Saturday to decide whether or not to extend a tax already on the books. The proposition would extend the current 20 year tax by four years, generating an additional $100 million for school repairs.
The district is trying to bring older schools up to par with new ones. About 20 schools would see improvements. Some were built more than a century ago and require constant maintenance that has become costly.
Parents made T-shirts and knocked on doors to drum up support. They also plan to make calls Saturday morning to remind voters to head to the polls.
During early voting, 476 people cast their ballots.
Polls open Saturday at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
