Field for golf's third major set
GULLANE, Scotland - The field for the 142nd British Open golf championship, to be played July 18-21 at Muirfield in Scotland, is set. The entry list reads like a who's who of golf these days with all of the top names set to compete. Among the missing will be former Open champ John Daly because he faces elbow surgery that will end his PGA Tour season. He says he hit a root chipping out of the rough on the 12th hole at The Greenbrier Classic on Thursday.
The surgery means Daly will miss the only two majors for which he is eligible, the British Open and the PGA Championship, because he is a past champion.
The winners of the first two majors in golf this year, the Masters and the U.S. Open, were Adam Scott and Justin Rose.
