Fico finalist for player of the year
BATON ROUGE - LSU softball pitcher Rachele Fico has been chosen as one of 25 finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. The announcement came Wednesday from the Amateur Softball Association of America and USA Softball.
The award is considered the most prestigious in Division I women's collegiate softball.
Fico has been a Top 25 finalist for the honor in each of the last two seasons and remains among fellow All-Americans Britni Sneed, Leslie Klein, Kristin Schmidt and Kirsten Shortridge as the only LSU players to be named as USA Softball Top 25 finalists. Sneed and Schmidt were among one of 10 finalists for the award during the 2002 and 2003 seasons, respectively.
Fico has a Southeastern Conference-leading 185 strikeouts.
