NEW ORLEANS- The Mississippi River's fickle flooding is testing the patience of residents, some of whom were returning to their homes after being driven away by the threat of rising water, while others are still being kept away as inspectors try to ensure the structures are sound.
In Louisiana, Sheree Sanders, her husband and their two children had heeded a mandatory evacuation but returned to their home near Krotz Springs. They're keeping their bags packed just in case.
Hundreds in Louisiana had left homes threatened by the opening of a floodway that's diverting water from the Mississippi to protect more heavily populated cities downriver. By Monday, the threat appeared to have diminished for some neighborhoods, while another community to the south was still waiting to see how bad the flooding could get.
