BATON ROUGE - FEMA's mobile homes are being set up in an abandoned trailer park community off Blount Road.

Wednesday, WBRZ recorded video of workers adding aprons around the bottom of trailers and utility crews connecting lines to each unit. The lot is a stone's throw north of the airport property line, just behind some trees.

FEMA would not comment, specifically, on the location. The trailers are identical to one's showed off by FEMA earlier. The Manufactured Housing Units - or MHU's - will be made available for people who are eligible for FEMA help and unable to utilize rental assistance due to a lack of places to rent in the area.

People who live in the area around where the MHUs are being brought in said work started two weeks ago.

"After the first two or three trailers started coming... it became a little more quicker," one person said.

The lot has been vacant for years, neighbors said it was used for trailers after Hurricane Katrina.

Any location selected by FEMA to have a manufactured housing unit placed on it must undergo numerous inspections.

FEMA said it has received 63,000 applications for housing solutions.

FEMA also provides housing assistance through lease or rental options of hotels or apartments. Louisiana is offering assistance through its Shelter at Home program, where people are given money to rebuild parts of their home quickly so they can return.

For both the MHU and rental options, there are various eligibility requirements and specifics on each program. Call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 for information or visit DisasterAssistance.gov. Those who are eligible will find out directly from FEMA after first applying for assistance through the organization. It is important people register with FEMA.
