Feds giving state $147 million for education
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan says Louisiana will get $147 million in federal funds to aid teachers and other educators.
Duncan said Monday that the funds stem from a $26 billion federal bill that backers called a state stimulus measure.
The legislation includes a $10 billion education fund to support jobs in the current school year.
The Advocate reports the aid has to be used to pay the salaries and benefits of teachers, school administrators and other essential staff.
Education leaders said last month that the state might not be eligible for the aid but announced last week that Louisiana would qualify.
