NEW ORLEANS - U.S. Attorney Jim Letten says he has demoted his first assistant U.S. attorney for posting online comments on a newspaper website.

A south Louisiana landfill owner who is being investigated by federal agencies had sued Jan Maselli Mann, charging she defamed him in anonymous online posts.

In a statement emailed Thursday, Letten says Mann posted comments on NOLA.com, the website of The Times-Picayune.

He says Mann was removed from supervisory duties as first assistant U.S. attorney and chief of the criminal division on Monday night.

Letten says he has been in touch with the Justice Department since he learned about Fred Heebe's allegations. He says that since the department is now reviewing the matter, he cannot comment further.
