February Gardening Tips

Complete tree and shrub pruning.
Continue preparing beds for spring planting.
Plant spring flowering bulbs and set out sweet corn.
Apply pre-emergent herbicides.
Watch for brown patch in the lawn.
Groom ground covers.
Prune roses.
Cultivate rose beds.
Fertilize trees and shrubs.
Continue to water, weed and fertilize cool weather annuals such as pansies, snapdragons, calendulas, and dianthus.

Week 1
Give wild birds seed and suet.
Plant potatoes for harvest in late spring.
Start a compost for yard and kitchen waste.

Week 2
Add landscape fabric mulch to all shrub beds.
Remove asparagus ferns from established beds.
Apply pre-emergent herbicides to the lawn.

Week 3
Prune roses to promote a flush of Spring bouquets.
Clean litter from rose beds and add Lime-Sulphur spray for sanitation.
Continue planting trees and shrubs while plants are dormant.

Week 4
Plant corn in the vegetable garden to insure early harvest.
Clean out empty beds for soil preparation prior to spring planting.
Apply Weed & Feed-type fertilizers to lawn.
