Father of murdered infant to be charged
BATON ROUGE - Police said they will charge the father of a Baton Rouge infant who died this weekend with her murder.
A Baton Rouge Police spokesperson said charges against 28-year-old John William Hope will be upgraded from second degree cruelty to a juvenile to first degree murder for the death of 3-month-old Josephine Hope.
Detectives said Hope brought his daughter to the hospital Wednesday and claimed the girl fell off a changing table. Investigators said the girl had other injuries which didn't match the father's story, including broken ribs and three skull fractures, and police arrested him for cruelty charges.
Josephine Hope died Saturday after spending days in intensive care with no brain activity. The parish coroner said her autopsy found the injuries were consistent with a homicide, not accidental death.
Police said they will re-book Hope on the upgraded charges later Tuesday.
