Father faces murder charges after child dies
BATON ROUGE - Police upgraded charges against a Baton Rouge father after the child he's accused of beating died Thursday morning.
Investigators said Vernell Day now faces first degree murder charges after 5-year-old Jay'v'une Bergin passed away at a local hospital.
Detectives said Bergin was taken to the hospital earlier this week with injuries so severe he was bleeding into his brain. They said he also had a number of other, older bruises that were in various stages of healing and signs of malnourishment.
Investigators said Day told 911 dispatchers the child fell out of bed, and refused to talk to detectives.
Kate Bergin, the child's grandmother, told News 2 she blamed DCFS for what happened because they gave Day custody even though he was a felon. Court records showed Day also owed more than $22,000 in child support to a second woman.
