This morning rescue crews found the body of a man who drowned in the Amite River in Livingston Parish yesterday evening.

Officials with the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office say Jose Ricardo Hernandez Chavez , of Denham Springs, La., was fishing with his 6-year-old son. Investigators believe the boy dropped his fishing pole in the water and was swept away by the current when he jumped in after it. Chavez jumped in the river and was able to rescue his son, but he never resurfaced, officials said.

Rescue crews found Chavez's body near the Magnolia Bridge, not far from where the two were fishing.

Officials believe a strong current may have caused the drowning.
