PORT ALLEN – A grand jury ruled today that a West Baton Rouge deputy was justified when he shot and killed someone during an undercover drug investigation.

The shooting happened two weeks ago at the Motel 6 in Port Allen.  Sheriff Mike Cazes said the deputy arranged to buy drugs from Melissa Moye, but she was followed into the room by 18-year-old Eric Williams who pointed a gun at the deputy and demanded money.

He threw the money at Williams, who bent over to pick it up while still pointing the gun at the deputy.  Cazes said that’s when the deputy drew his own weapon and shot Williams, killing him.

Today the grand jury also handed down indictments for Moye and two others, Tayran Hutchinson and Leon Moye, charging them with being principal to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Melissa Moye and Hutchinson are currently in the parish jail, while Leon Moye is still at large.
