Fatal crash kills two in Ascension Parish

Update: Two people are dead after a fatal crash in Ascension Parish.

Louisiana State Police says 73-year-old Remy Schexnayder, Livingston, and his female passenger died after their Nissan pickup was struck by 30-year-old William R. Helmke, Central.

Helmke was traveling west in a GMC pickup on LA 431, east of US 61, just before noon today. His truck crossed the center line in a curve and struck Schexnayder’s truck head on.

Schexnayder was transported to St. Elizabeht Hospital in Gonzales, where he later died from his injuries. His female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld until her family is notified.

Helmke was injured in the crash and also transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital. He was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, 3rd offense DWI, driving under suspension, driving left of center, and open container. He will be booked into the Ascension Parish Jail in Donaldsonville once he’s released from the hospital.

Troopers have submitted a sample of Helmke’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis A blood sample from Schexnayder was also submitted, though authorities do not suspect alcohol or drug use in his case.
