Family sues to learn missing inmate's whereabouts
An inmate's family checked one state prison, then another, and finally sued a hospital in Monroe to find out where Billy Dew Jr. was.
After the suit was filed, Katrina Dew learned that her son had been hospitalized for nearly a month.
A state district judge ruled that LSU Medical Center in Monroe had to let attorney Lewis Scott visit Dew.
Scott said Dew was in the prison wing, seriously injured. Scott said Dew had trouble moving his fingers, legs and feet.
He says Dew told him he was injured Jan. 12 at Richland Parish Detention Center, in an incident during which he was shocked with a stun gun.
Staff at the jail forwarded requests for comment to the warden, who was unavailable Tuesday afternoon.
