CENTRAL- Kirk Newsom was on his way to work this morning when he saw a massive cement truck barrelling in his direction on two wheels at the corner of Greenwell Springs and Frenchtown Roads.
With only seconds to react, Newsom gunned the engine. The cement truck scraped the back of Newsom's truck but he escaped without any major injuries.
"Scary, very scary," Kirk Newsom said after it was all over. "All I could see was the concrete truck landing on top of me, killing us."
Across the street from where the crash happened is a cross which marks the spot where Newsom's father, William Newsom, was killed last last October. He was also hit by another vehicle at that intersection.
"We kept looking at the cross because we have a cross where my dad is in the median," said Kirk's sister, Dawn Newsom. "He said he was definitely being watched over. If he hadn't gunned it, I don't see how he would have made it."
It took nearly four hours to upright the truck after the wreck. It's unclear if the driver of the truck was cited.
However, the family is counting their blessings.
"It's going to make a big difference coming up on my dad's one year anniversary," Dawn Newsom said. "We're all going to be together. We're going to Grand Isle to spread his ashes so it's like, this makes you wake up more because I know my dad was watching out for him."
