BATON ROUGE - The Red Cross is assisting a family after a fire ravaged their home Tuesday night.

It took firefighters more than an hour to get flames under control after they were arrived in the 9400 block of Wild Valley Rd. just after 10:00 pm Tuesday.

"I got a garden hose, to keep the roof of my house and the sideboards, wet them down until the fire department got here," said George Chesterfield, who lives next door.

Flames were shooting through the roof when they arrived on scene. Firefighters even had to retreat from the home at one point because they thought they roof was going to collapse.

The fire was contained just after 11:00 pm, but not before a neighbor's car went up in flames.

"I love driving that car, and I couldn't get it out, after I realized it had flames on the rear, I didn't want to get in and drive it, I just left it there," said Chesterfield.

He was happy, though, that his neighbors made it out alive, despite the total loss to the home.

"The blessing about that is that they got out safely, this is material stuff, this stuff can be replaced, I know it was a lot of memories, and family memories and pictures of their kids, pictures of them growing up and when they were married, I felt bad that that can't be replaced, but I feel good that they got out," said Chesterfield.

The fire is still under investigation, but firefighters don't think it was suspicious.
