The Presidential Citizens Medal, the nation's second-highest for a civilian, was awarded to six adults killed in the Sandy Hook school massacre in Connecticut. Each of the victims were represented by family members as President Obama recognized the educators' sacrifices. He read their names one-by-one, saying they gave their lives to protect the children in their care. Also honored with medals, pediatrician T. Berry Brazelton and former Pennsylvania Senator Harris Wofford and a handful of others for their contributions to public service.
