Exchange 'Gas for Guns' this weekend
BATON ROUGE - BRAVE continues to get guns off the streets of Baton Rouge through their 'Gas for Guns' program. You can exchange your firearms for up to $300 in fuel money.
Since the program began, they've given out more than $40,000 in gas cards and have $40,000 more to give away.
$50 cards are available for those smaller than a .38 caliber, $100 for .38 or higher and $300 for assault rifles. Since those high-powered rifles are the weapon of choice for many criminals, they come with a higher price tag.
The program is also about keeping the unsecured guns out of the hands of children. District Attorney Hillar Moore says Gas for Guns is a safe, proven way to get firearms off the street.
"We looked all around the country to find out who did what," he told News 2's Rebecca Buchanan. "Just about everywhere we went, they gave out cash. We thought we could do it a better, safer way, so it wouldn't be exchanged for another weapon or drugs, but it could be used for milk or other kind of food items."
Gas for Guns is Saturday from 10 a.m.- noon at Elm Grove Baptist Church on 38th Street. If you have a gun you want to exchange, make sure you put it in the trunk of your car to bring it to the event. If you're walking, have it inside a case or bag.
