AMITE- Former Kentwood Police Chief Gregory Newton has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to a charge that he tampered with cash that was recovered during a burglary investigation.
State District Court Judge Wayne Ray Chutz sentenced Newton to five years of probation after the former chief pleaded guilty on Tuesday to malfeasance in office. Chutz also ordered Newton to pay a $2,500 fine.
Louisiana Attorney General James "Buddy" Caldwell's office says Newton resigned Monday as part of his plea agreement.
The case against Newton stems from an April 2012 burglary at a home in Kentwood. Mississippi authorities recovered roughly $11,000 that had been stolen from the home and turned it over to Newton.
Caldwell's office says about $2,000 was missing when evidence was returned to the burglary victim.
