Ex-official charged with mail fraud
A former director of the Louisiana Governor's Program on Abstinence has been charged with mail fraud in Baton Rouge federal court.
Gail Ray Dignam of New Orleans served during the administrations of Gov. Mike Foster and Gov. Kathleen Blanco.
Gov. Bobby Jindal replaced her.
Dignam's indictment alleges she secretly directed approximately $9,000 in government funds to a son and another unidentified person.
In July, the Legislative Auditor's Office released a report that questioned Dignam's expenditure of more than $150,000 in government funds.
Each of the two mail fraud counts pending against Dignam carries a possible penalty of 20 years in prison and fine of $250,000.
