BATON ROUGE - The State Ethics Board says former Kenner Mayor Phil Capitano must pay for the late filing of a campaign finance report.
The board, according to The Times-Picayune, declined Friday to waive the fee and Capitano owes $600.
Capitano, who lost a race to Mike Yenni in 2010, said he asked to waive the fee because he did not know he had to file a report for no activity in 2012 and only $2,415 in one account and $3,500 in another. However, any campaign with money is subject to reporting laws, and all annual reports are due Feb. 15.
Capitano and his accountant filed the report 14 days late, triggering the automatic late fee.
Ethics administrator Kathleen Allen says reminder notices often are sent for reports coming due.
