GONZALES - Friday, a grand jury indicted David Johnson, 38, on first degree murder and violation of a protective order charges in relation to his estranged wife's death earlier this summer.

Prosecutors said Johnson beat the woman, Monica Johnson, to death with a baseball bat outside of their home in Geismar. When she was killed, she had a restraining order against Johnson. David Johnson was prohibited from coming into the home, authorities said.

Monica Johnson's child from another marriage was present and witnessed the beating. The son was also attacked and suffered a broken arm, WBRZ previously reported.

The indictment was procedural. Johnson had already been arrested.

"I couldn't be more pleased. What David Johnson did to Monica was the worst crime I've endured in my career, and my heart goes out to this family, especially Monica's children. I look forward to moving this case forward through its conclusion," Assistant District Attorney Shawn R. Bush said in a prepared statement.

Johnson remains in jail without a bond.
