Essen Lane widening lane closures
BATON ROUGE - Lane closures have started in what will be a years-long project to widen Essen Lane to as many as seven lanes.
Sunday night, work began near the Ward Creek Bridge. First, the area will be re-striped then work will move forward on widening the bridge.
Work on the bridge could take about a year.
Eventually, work will move toward Perkins Road where there will be three travel lanes in each direction; from Ward Creek and the I-10 area to Perkins Road. There will be a center turn lane for the stretch, too.
The state estimates about 55,000 vehicles travel this area of Essen each day.
The immediate work will take place overnight and should be cleared for the morning rush.
