A Bossier Parish city jail inmate jumped out of a jail van at 55 mph and was seriously injured, Bossier Parish sheriff's spokesman Ed Basswell said Sunday.

Claude Martin James, 45, of Bossier City was listed in fair condition at LSU Hospital in Shreveport.

James was one of five inmates being transported from the Bossier City Jail to the Bossier Parish Maximum Security Facility in Plain Dealing about 7 a.m. Saturday when he jumped onto state Highway 3 just north of Benton. James' hands were handcuffed to his waist when he jumped.

James had been booked earlier Saturday for drug posession and disturbing the peace while intoxicated.
