WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH - Residents and environmentalists took a stand in Port Allen tonight against a new chemical company, Thermaldyne.

The oil sludge recycling company wants the state department of environmental quality to approve a new facility. Opponents want it denied.

So many people showed up to speak in the West Baton Rouge Council Chambers authorities made dozens of people leave the room and crowd around a television in the hallway.

The facility is almost complete and will be located about two miles Southwest of the New Bridge and LA 1 in Port Allen. Thermaldyne says it will employ 75 people.

Environmentalists say the facility is seeking a special exemption to environmental laws and that should be denied. Representatives for the company say the facility is very small and will not cause any harm to nearby residents.
